What is L'Arche?

Life Sharing | Value of People | Spirituality | Commitment | Changing Society

L'Arche is about revealing the unique value of people.

"The first fundamental aspect of L'Arche's identity in Canada is: The recognition of the unique value of person with a developmental disability to reveal that human suffering and joy can lead to growth, healing and unity. When their gift is received, individual, social and ecclesial change occurs... "
Mission and Identity of L'Arche in Canada

"Whatever their gifts of their limitations, people are all bound together in a common humanity.
Everyone is of unique and sacred value, and everyone has the same dignity and the same rights."
the Charter of L'Arche

"It seems paradoxical to say that people with disabilities have taught me what it means to be human and that they are leading me into a new vision of society, a more human society."
Jean Vanier

Stories...

Always my problem with Paul was the same: why couldn't he shower after a day working on the farm? I couldn't enjoy my meal sitting next to someone who smelled like a barnyard. Paul's view was that if this was his home, he could be comfortable in his own way after a hard day's work. One night at the dinner table, Paul's smell and my annoyance grew so intense that after a loud argument Paul angrily left the table. The rest of us tried to recreate some feel of family sharing. After dishes, Frank called me aside to his bedroom where I could understand him despite his speech difficulties. "I see you're having trouble with Paul," he said carefully. I brushed his concern aside, "Never mind. Paul and I will work it out." Frank looked me in the eye and said, "You know, if you want to help Paul, you have to start loving him."

Rosie's body is contorted and rigid when she is awake, but relaxes in sleep and in the bath. Her eyes are beautiful - brown with hints of green, brilliant, like windows to her heart. When I go to waken Rosie, her body is peaceful, her brown eyes look at me with tenderness and light - for me, it is like being in the presence of an angel. I give thanks to receive this light that is so freely given.
