| Faith and Light was founded by
Marie-Hélène Matthieu and Jean Vanier in 1971. Faith and Light
communities are not residences, but places where people living with
developmental disabilities, their parents and friends meet
regularly, about once a month. They create bonds which deepen
through common hopes and difficulties and the sharing of prayer,
joyous times, and the eucharist and other celebrations.
People with developmental disabilities,
who are at the very heart of the communities, bring their gifts of
simplicity, suffering and joy. They find there friends and a place
where they can celebrate and express their faith in Jesus.
To parents of people with developmental
disabilities, Faith and Light offers support and friendship.
To friends, Faith and Light offers the
opportunity to form community and to be committed to people with
developmental disabilities and their families. Friend discover that
our weaknesses may become sources of love and life for the world.
There are 1700 Faith and Light
communities in 70 different countries.
